WHAT IS UGANDA NATIONAL SPELLING BEE PROGRAM ?

The Uganda national spelling bee (UNSB), is an initiative brought forward to improve students’ ability to spell and    comprehend the English language, through encouraging teachers to conduct a spelling bee within their curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to use the official Optimist Spelling Bee rules so that the students become familiar with them and therefore enabling the winners to be more competitive as they advance through each level of the competition. This gives all students a more competitive advantage to participate in this exciting language program.

INTRODUCTION

Primary or elementary education is typically the first stage of compulsory education, coming between early childhood and secondary education. In some countries like Uganda the government made it compulsory for children to receive primary education although it is permissible for parents to provide it. The major goals of primary education are achieving basic literacy and numeracy among all pupils therefore UNSB is coming up with this spelling school program to address this matter so as to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal “4” which is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030”, we therefore aim ensuring  that most children in the country regardless of race or gender will be able to complete primary schooling with an excellent spelling skill in the English language.
